Understanding the Tiers

The world isn’t black and white, and neither is the relationship between humans and AI. Our tier system provides an honest, transparent way for creators and businesses to communicate exactly how their work was made.

In the spirit of full disclosure: this website would currently qualify as Craft Assisted. We’re working on that.

Craft Assisted

AI may have been used as a supporting tool, but a human led, shaped, and took responsibility for the final output.

What this means:
  • AI tools were used during the creative or production process
  • A human was in control of all significant decisions
  • The final output was reviewed, refined, and approved by a person
  • The creator takes full responsibility for the work

Examples: A writer who uses AI for research and first-draft suggestions but writes the final piece. A developer who uses AI-assisted coding tools but architects and reviews all code.

Craft Verified

No AI was used in creating the final product or service. Conceived, created, and delivered by human hands and minds.

What this means:
  • No generative AI was used in the creation of the product or service
  • Traditional digital tools (spell-check, calculators, etc.) are permitted
  • The entire creative process was human-driven
  • AI may exist elsewhere in the supply chain (e.g., logistics)

Examples: A hand-written novel. A logo designed from scratch by a graphic designer. Software written entirely by human engineers.

Craft Pure

No AI was used anywhere in the supply chain — from origin to delivery. The highest standard of human craft.

What this means:
  • No generative AI at any point in the entire value chain
  • Raw materials, production, packaging, and delivery are all AI-free
  • The most rigorous standard of human-made certification
  • Requires full supply chain transparency

Examples: Handmade artisan goods from sourced natural materials. A farm-to-table restaurant with fully human operations.

Why tiers matter

A binary “AI or not” label would be dishonest. The reality is that AI exists on a spectrum, and so does its use. A photographer who uses AI-powered auto-focus is not the same as an image generated entirely by a diffusion model.

Our tiers respect that nuance. They let creators be honest about their process without being penalised for using any tool at all. And they let consumers make informed choices based on what matters to them.

Transparency isn’t about perfection — it’s about honesty.
